About Joseph Stalin
Joseph Vissarionovich Djugashvili was born December 18th 1878 in the small town of Gori, Georgia. Stalin grew up poor and an only child. His father was an shoemaker and a alcoholic who beat him. His mother was a laundress. When he was in his 30's he took the name Stalin from the Russian meaning "Man of Steel". After Stalin left school, he became part of a underground political agitator, He took part in labor demonstrations and strikes. He then joined the Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin. He was involved in a lot of criminal activity such as bank heists to help fund the Bolshevik party. He was arrested many times and was exiled to Siberia.
In 1906 Stalin married Eakaterina "Kato" Svanidize (1885-1907) , a seamstress. They had one son, who died as a prisoner in Germany during World War II (1907-1943). Kato died when her son was an infant from typhus. Stalin then remarried Nadezha "Nadya" Alliluyeva (1901-1932) they had two children a boy and a girl. Nadya committed suicide in her early 30's. Stalin also fathered many other children out of wedlock.
In 1912 Vladimir Lenin appointed Joseph Stalin to serve on the first central committee of the Bolshevik party. They then seized power in Russia. Lenin was the first leader. Stalin moving up and became more and more popular. By the late 1920's he had become dictator of the Soviet Union .
